In 1952 cardiologist Paul Zoll demonstrated that a failing heart could be paced by external electrical stimulation, launching the field of cardiac pacing. Zoll, the son of Jewish immigrants, worked at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, and his work paved the way for the modern pacemaker.
