Numerical weather prediction forecasts the atmosphere by solving physics equations on a computer, the basis of modern forecasting. The first successful computer forecast was produced in 1950 at Princeton, led by mathematician John von Neumann and meteorologist Jule Charney, building on Lewis Fry Richardson's earlier theory. Von Neumann and Charney were both Jewish; Richardson was not.
