Interferons are proteins the body releases to interfere with viruses, and they later became medicines for hepatitis, multiple sclerosis and some cancers. They were co-discovered in 1957 at London's National Institute for Medical Research by Alick Isaacs, a Scottish Jewish virologist, together with the Swiss researcher Jean Lindenmann.
