HMAC (hash-based message authentication code) is a widely used method to verify that a message is authentic and unaltered, built on top of a cryptographic hash function. It was introduced in 1996 by Mihir Bellare, Ran Canetti and Hugo Krawczyk and is now embedded in internet standards such as TLS. Two of its three authors, Ran Canetti and Hugo Krawczyk, are Israeli cryptographers.
