The Fantastic Four, first published in 1961, launched the modern Marvel age of superheroes portrayed as flawed, quarreling human beings. It was created by writer Stan Lee, born Stanley Lieber to Romanian Jewish immigrants, and artist Jack Kirby, born Jacob Kurtzberg to an Austrian Jewish family in New York. Their partnership went on to co-create many of Marvel's most enduring characters.
