In 1905 Albert Einstein published the special theory of relativity and derived the mass–energy equivalence, expressed as E = mc². It shows that mass and energy are interchangeable and underpins nuclear physics and astrophysics. Einstein was Jewish and became one of the best-known figures in the history of science.
