Modern drip irrigation was developed by Israeli engineer Simcha Blass, who designed a dripper releasing water slowly at the roots; the system was commercialized from 1965 by Netafim on Kibbutz Hatzerim. It dramatically cut water use and helped make arid land productive worldwide. Blass was a Jewish engineer working in Israel.
