Digital cash is electronic money designed to be spent privately, and it laid conceptual groundwork later echoed in cryptocurrencies. David Chaum introduced the key idea of blind signatures in 1982 and founded DigiCash to build 'ecash', among the first privacy-preserving digital payment systems. Chaum was born in Los Angeles to Jewish parents and is widely regarded as a pioneer of applied cryptography.
