Deep learning, the neural-network approach behind modern AI, was advanced by several researchers, among them Yoshua Bengio, who shared the 2018 Turing Award for foundational work on deep neural networks. His research helped enable today's language, vision and speech systems. Bengio comes from a Moroccan-Jewish family that settled in France and then Canada.
