In the 1960s Aaron T. Beck developed cognitive therapy, showing that changing distorted patterns of thought can relieve depression and anxiety; it became one of the most evidence-based psychotherapies in the world. Beck was born in Providence to Jewish immigrants from Russia. The closely related approach REBT was created by Albert Ellis, also from a Jewish family.
