Christianity began in the 1st century CE as a movement within Judaism, founded on the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth — a Jew from Galilee — and first spread by his Jewish apostles. Its scriptures, ethics and messianic hope are rooted in the Hebrew Bible and Second Temple Judaism. Now the world's largest religion, it grew directly out of the Jewish tradition.
