In the early 1970s Jacob Bekenstein proposed that a black hole carries entropy proportional to the area of its event horizon, linking gravity, thermodynamics and information. The idea, later refined by Stephen Hawking's radiation work, remains central to theoretical physics. Bekenstein was a Jewish physicist who spent much of his career in Israel.
