In 1948 Ralph Alpher, with his advisor George Gamow, published the theory that the light chemical elements formed in the first minutes after the Big Bang, work that also predicted a cosmic background radiation later detected in 1965. It remains a pillar of modern cosmology. Alpher was an American Jewish physicist.
