The BCS theory, published in 1957, was the first successful microscopic explanation of superconductivity, showing how electrons form 'Cooper pairs' that flow without resistance. It is named for Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer, who shared the 1972 Nobel Prize in Physics; Leon Cooper, who identified the paired electrons, is an American Jewish physicist.
